The Devon School of Yoga has been
created in response to a need for a complete Yoga course covering
all aspects of the subject. Set in 'The Forge Yoga Centre', Totnes,
Devon, UK, ‘Cortijo de Santa Cruz’, Las Alpujarras,
Southern Spain, ‘Throwleigh House Residential Centre’,
Dartmoor, Devon and ‘The Barefoot Barn’, Chagford,
Devon, the ideal surroundings are provided, for Yoga practice,
study and contemplation.
The School, established in 1989, teaches an holistic approach
to Yoga. As well as coming from an eclectic base, its core practices
are based on the Dr. Pillai system of kriyas, pranayama and meditation,
and its spiritual energy source comes from Swami Sivananda Paramahamsa
(of Kerala) and the Siddha line of teachers.
The School aims to provide the foundations on which individuals
can improve and maintain their physical, mental and spiritual
well-being. To train individuals to (a) become competent Yoga
teachers and (b) to use specific Yoga methods as a complementary
therapy to help others. To increase personal and public awareness
of natural ways of living, eating and healing enabling individuals
to assume more responsibility for their own health.
Yoga - a way of life" sums up the School's philosophy. The
word Yoga is seen as an umbrella term so as to incorporate an
holistic multi-dimensional approach, thereby appealing to all
aspects of humanity. The foundations of this broad-based approach
are grounded in Hatha and RajaYoga. A variety of physical exercises,
breathing techniques, conscious relaxation and meditation practices
are backed up by diet, massage and universal philosophy.
On completion of the Foundation Yoga Course students can continue
their studies on the Yoga Teacher Training Course. This Course
comprises 24 days of practice and study held over eleven weekends
in Devon, with two of the weekends as three day residential. This
second year builds upon all the first year's practice and theory
with a deeper study of Anatomy & Physiology and the introduction
to the subjects of Pathology, Teaching Skills, Counselling and
Healing being introduced. The self-awareness, knowledge and healing
gained in the Foundation Course is further nurtured and developed,
instilling individuals with the confidence to share it with others
in a practical way.
Graduates of a School on the Yoga Register (YRS)
are entitled to use the letters YRT (Yoga Register
Teacher) and benefit from a discounted subscription rate of £25
for annual entry on The Yoga Register.
